The Economist has and BBC have been doing a good job of covering Zimbabwe long after it became popular. A couple of interesting bits I have seen the last couple of months include the army starting to steal to feed itself, the army eating elephants (to be fair they have an over population problem with elephants), and inflation approaching 1000%.

The notion that this administration has taken the "long view" of things - especially in light of the current economic climate - is beyond laughable. That Sec. Rice's purview is international is not an excuse for ducking this charge as the failure to constructively engage foreign nations in matters of security has contributed to this breakdown.

laloca sez: no disagreement here. the squandering of a planet's worth of goodwill after 9.11 to pursue a misbegotten personal agenda to unprovoked war in the name of "domestic security" should be the bush administration's only legacy.

The failures of the water and sewer system in our beloved city can be laid at the feet of every administration dating back Nixon who was the first to demonize taxes. Reagan advanced that baton beyond all calculations; and the smattering of democrats have lacked the political strength, equity, and moral courage (in varying measures) to stem that tide. We have neglected our nation's infrastructure at our peril while gorging ourselves on false profits. Now all of the bills are coming due in the form of failed bridges, watermains, and crumbling airports. Shame on them all.

laloca sez: i have a hard time laying it all at the feet of the federal government, although DC is a special case. i'd like to see the states taking a more active role in their infrastructure maintenance, rather than waiting for federal agencies and handouts, which will always move at a glacial pace.
