Good grief! Given that Dartmouth in particular as moved away from lit profs teaching writing to an independent writing program, it seems unfathomable that the comments she’s making are doing any good. Heck, I was a TA for the writing program armed with only a BA and I offered more constructive help. I do more commentary now, and that’s not actually what I’m “supposed” to do in my courses, “TT” as I am. As intrigued as I am about her research (bridging science and lit), she actually sounds from the story like an abysmal teacher. A shame.
Then again, the woman who cleaned out her purse in the front row of my classroom during a guest lecture *did* inispire almost two single-spaced pages of clarified classroom ettiquette in the following semester’s syllabi…
