define “protect”

“My job is to protect the American people, it’s my most important job, the most important assignment I have, and I will continue to do that regardless of the season.”

George W. Bush, fundraising speech, 23 September 2002

will he protect the american people from the predations of corporate america?

will he protect the health of the american people from undrinkable water, unbreatheable air? from the irresponsible production & marketing practices of the tobacco industry?

will he protect the american people from a crumbling public health system? will he do so beyond the narrow-minded and politically valuable scope of terrorism?

will he protect the natural heritage of the american people from law-breaking polluting industries?

will he protect the political will of the american people from entirely preventable polling problems all across the country (and specifically in his brother’s backyard)?

will he protect the american people from having their country dragged into an avoidable, unethical, and self-serving war that could take the lives of many of their sons and daughters?

what exactly is he protecting us from?

    you left off:

will he protect us from those who would trample our Constitutional rights for their own power?

    Oh wait…

Could it be he is protecting us from a sociopathic dictator with a penchant for making really bad decisions (and a proven record of seeking revenge on those who he thinks have doen him wrong.) so that the chance of a CBRN weapon going off in a US city is reduced. Ask yourself this. If bombing the shit out of al qa’ida and the taliban 6 months before 11 sept would have kept that day from happening, would you support it? If yes, why. If no, why. Talk to an Iraqi and ask him about Saddam. Stop listening to those who wring their hands and say he’s not a bad guy, why must we bully? Read your history.
