recent movie roundup
x-men (last night): a lot of stuff crammed into 2 hours. mostly good f/x, although some shots look suspiciously like outtakes from clash of the titans. the opening sequence, which tried its hardest to make ian mackellan and patrick stewart look 20 years younger was a distracting mishmosh of soft focus, vaseline-smudged lenses, rosy lighting, and massive amounts of makeup.
i would’ve liked to see more of the phoenix — she should’ve been a more central character, not shunted to the periphery. i’ll never like halle berry as storm, but i was pleasantly surprised by grammar’s turn as the beast. and arclight was underused as one of magento’s minions, despite the fact that they got spectacularly-proportioned (and i don’t mean in a buxom way) omahyra mota to portray her.
(promising trailers: ghost rider and the next installment of pirates of the caribbean, while my super ex-girlfriend looks like a rental.)
kinky boots. loved it. bought the soundtrack. now i walk around everywhere singing, “i wanna be e-VIL, i wanna spit TACKS, i wanna be e-VIL, and cheat at JACKS!” chiwetel ejiofor. yay! (after seeing it in the theater i had to watch serenity at home to get another chiwetel fix.)
thank you for smoking. aaron eckhart is good. maria bello is underused. and sam elliot is still the sexiest man alive. (ooh! and he’s in ghost rider!)
